39th Air Division, Misawa Air Base, Japan, March 1964

Units Assigned to the 39th Air Division
The U.S. Air Force established the 39th Air Division at Misawa Air Base on March 1, 1952, with the mission of providing command and control of all aircraft assigned to the air defense of Northern Japan. The Air Division remained in place until January 15, 1968, and was Japan and the U.S.'s first line of defense against Soviet aggression in the Pacific. (U.S. Air Force graphic/Released)

14th Fighter Squadron Morale Patch, OSW 2002-3
On March 21, 2003, the 14th Fighter Squadron was the first U.S. Air Force F-16 squadron to fly combat missions in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Capt Thomas J. Lynch (first row, center) -- the 35th Fighter Wing's all-time, top Ace -- poses with fellow Aces of the 35th Fighter Group during World War II. In December 1952 and Janaury 1953, U.S. Air Force pilots from Misawa Air Base intercepted unidentified flying objects. The Misawa Wing Spread, the base newspaper, carried a story about the intercepts on January 23, 1953.
