U.S. Air Force Col. Oliver Lause, 35th Fighter Wing commander, operates an Avian Dissuader during a Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) program familiarization as part of a Wild Weasel Walk-Through at Misawa Air Base, Japan, Aug. 18, 2026. The nonlethal laser is one tool BASH personnel use to move birds away from operational areas, by placing wing leadership directly alongside BASH personnel, the Wild Weasel Walkthrough demonstrated how seemingly small preventive actions can protect multimillion-dollar aircraft, reduce mission risk and preserve the wing’s ability to deliver combat airpower.
