Memorial Day was formally observed for the first time May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia as a way of honoring those who died during the Civil War. Misawa Air Base held a Memorial Day retreat on May 25 to pause and remember military personnel who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
