They grew from a small group of avid skiers and snowboarders and soon became a very popular club here.

The Misawa Mogul Mashers Ski and Snowboard Club is nearly 20 years old and has more than 80 members.

"We are dedicated to seeing as much of Japan as possible while riding down hill every weekend of the season," said Billy Aulbach, publicity and advertising for the group.

Each trip includes breakfast, movies and a chance to relax in a hot tub at end of the snowy, fun-filled day. Trips are either one- or two-day trips. Providing large Japanese busses to travel in comfort, the club leaves the Main Gate at 6:30 a.m. every Saturday.

"We go to a different place every weekend," said Airman Albuch. On Jan. 27, a group of devoted skiers and snowboarders headed out to Amihari Ski Resort in Iwate Prefecture.

"The highlight of Mogul Mashers is how much they take care of you," said Mrs. Jess Richard. "We got to enjoy some great skiing and the onsen without having to worry about driving in the snow or getting lost. I also loved how friendly everyone was! I think it's a great way to ski if you're worried about driving up the mountains here.

Another side note might be how you don't actually have to be a member to take part. I always thought that you had to sign up at the beginning of the year, pay the membership fee and go every weekend. I like the pay as you go idea, since our weekends are so sporadic!"

Others said it was nice not having to drive so they could relax and enjoy the trip.

"The highlights for me were not having to drive and getting to watch the movie Top Gun on the way home," said Mrs. Deanna Ritzke. "Also the wine and cheese party after the day of an all powder skiing really finished the day off right. It's a fun group of people and no matter what level of skiing or snowboarding you're at, you're guaranteed to have a good time."

The club's next trip is scheduled for Feb. 3 to Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture. After that, the next trip is Feb. 10 at the Hakkoda Ski Resort in Aomori Prefecture.

"We will be riding on 10 feet plus snow on the mountains to our west," said Airman Albuch.

Northern Japan has much to offer for the outdoor enthusiast especially during the winter months. With excellent scenery and a variety of well-maintained runs, resorts within two hours drive of Misawa offer a chance to hit the slopes, get some exercise and see Japan.
