Next Monday is Memorial Day. For many, this marks the beginning of summer. Across the United States, communities will come together for parades and other festive celebrations. But let's not forget why Memorial Day is a national observance.

It's a day of remembrance for those who've given their lives in service to our nation. It's a time for us to honor those who've made the ultimate sacrifice for the ideals we cherish.

The tradition began more than 100 years ago when family members of fallen soldiers would visit the graves of their relatives or friends and decorate their resting place with flowers. That tradition continues today.

Our military men and women have defended America throughout history with courage and honor--many giving their lives to support what they know is right. They signed up to fight because they knew they had to; they signed up so someone else didn't have to, so America would always be the great place it is.

As we take part in this weekend's festivities keep in mind the sacrifices of those who came before us to ensure that all Americans are enjoying these activities in freedom.
Thank you, have a safe weekend.
