Personnel reduction expected at Misawa Published Feb. 27, 2014 35th Fighter Wing Public Affairs MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- The Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has authorized the reduction of approximately 500 personnel from intelligence units at Misawa Air Base, Japan, by the end of fiscal year 2015. The U.S. Department of Defense is currently realigning the workforce around the globe to create a more fiscally conservative and efficient environment for the DOD. "As with all proposed overseas force structure changes, the U.S. has coordinated with host nation officials at all levels prior to the decision and public announcement," said Capt. Korry Leverett, 35th Fighter Wing chief of public affairs. "The U.S. personnel reduction in no way affects the United States and Japan alliance, which remains a cornerstone of peace, stability, and prosperity in the region." Misawa is home to approximately 3,600 U.S. service members, and the reductions will affect the 373rd Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group, 373rd Support Squadron, 301st Intelligence Squadron, Navy Information Operations Command-Misawa, and the Army 708th Military Intelligence Detachment. In addition to the drawdown at Misawa, Royal Air Force Menwith Hill, England, is expected to lose 500 military and civilian positions.
