One Saturday morning in April of 1997, Hajime Sasaki, 35th Civil Engineer Squadron environmental engineer, brought together more than 200 Misawa Air Base members and over 100 Japanese citizens to collect more than 400 bags of trash, cleaning up the local fishing port and starting an annual tradition.

This past Saturday marked the 17th Annual Misawa Fish Port Cleanup. With Sasaki leading the way and the help of more than 500 volunteers from both Misawa Air Base and Misawa City, about 9,000 pounds of trash collected.

Members of all ages were invited to come and lend a helping hand in the cleanup. One group in particular was the Misawa Girl Scouts, accompanied by their parents; these young ladies did everything from cleanup trash to serve food to volunteers.

"This event was a great success," said Sasaki. "This is only one of several events the 35 CES environmental flight organizes to promote Earth Day."

Sasaki asks for everyone to please support the Solid Waste and Recycling program on and off the base. Thank you all for your time and support.
