Misawa Air Base donated more than 1 million Japanese yen to the Red Feather Campaign at the Misawa Community Center, Misawa, Japan, Mar. 13.

Established in the U.S. nearly 60 years ago, the Red Feather Campaign was adopted as a Japanese charitable organization and supports local welfare programs for the elderly, handicapped, development of youth, as well as supporting the community welfare and human services.

This campaign is constant throughout Japan each year, but is only held annually on base from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31.

"The annual Red Feather Campaign conducted throughout Japan is extremely important," said Col. Timothy Sundvall, 35th Fighter Wing commander.  "The campaign goes toward strengthening the partnership between the base community and our Japanese friends and neighbors."

Donations were collected by representatives from nine different 35 FW groups, squadrons and private organizations on base. These individuals collected from several locations on base and through various fund raising events.

"We are very appreciative of Misawa Air Base's hard work and their continued support throughout the years," said Mr. Ishi Numata, Aomori Red Feather Committee president.  "We place great value on assisting those in need and strengthening our bond."
