Edgren High School celebrates homecoming

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan --  Edgren High School celebrates homecoming Oct. 1-6 with a week full of games, events and spirit.

The theme for this year's homecoming is "Superheroes and Villains." Freshmen are representing 'The Incredible Hulk," while the sophomore class has chosen 'Superman.' The junior class has chosen 'X-Men,' and the seniors have 'Batman.' The 7th and 8th grade classes have even got in on the spirit with 'Spiderman' and 'Powder Puff Girls and Rowdy Ruff Boys' respectively.

The spirit-filled week includes some competition between the grades. Classes are competing in areas such as hallway decoration, float building and dress-up day participation to earn points for a cash prize at the end of homecoming.

Other activities include a pep assembly at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 3 and a bonfire at 5 p.m. Oct. 4 at the baseball field.

"The fire department is out there and we light up about 200 pallets," explained John Cannon, student counsel sponsor and librarian. "We burn the Zama Trojan in effigy. It's all in good fun and to build spirit."

Homecoming wouldn't be complete without sports.

"All teams are active this week," said Mr. Cannon.

The following games and sports events are scheduled for homecoming week:
- Powderpuff Football Game: Afternoon of Oct 3 on the football field
- Tennis vs. Zama: 3:30 p.m. Oct. 5 and 10 a.m. Oct. 6 at the tennis courts
- Volleyball vs. Zama: 5 p.m. Oct. 5 and 10 a.m. Oct. 6 in the high school gym
- Cross country vs. all DoDDS schools in Japan: 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at Citizens Park
- Football vs. Zama: 7 p.m. Oct. 5 on the football field

"We play Zama every year for homecoming," said Mr. Cannon. "We've beat them the last couple of years in football. We encourage everyone to come out and watch the game."

Another event the public is encouraged to attend is the homecoming parade. The parade will start at 2 p.m. Oct. 5 at Sollars Elementary School and proceed to the high school. The parade will include the class floats as well as fire trucks, ambulances, runway equipment and other vehicles from around base.

"It's our big rally before the big game," explained Mr. Cannon.

To end the week, a homecoming dance will be held 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at the collocated club. During the dance the homecoming court will be announced.

"We've been doing homecoming this way for six years now," said Mr. Cannon. "It is a lot of fun, but we couldn't do it without the support of the base. We get a lot of help from them. We hope to see everyone out at the parade and football game - it's kind of a big deal."
