Every military member and DoD civilian assigned to Misawa Air Base participated in a "Day of Reflection" Feb. 22.

The "Day of Reflection" was ordered for all U.S. bases in Japan by Lt. Gen. Bruce Wright, former commander of U.S. Forces Japan and 5th Air Force, in response to recent sexual assault allegations in Okinawa, Japan.

The intent of the day was to reinforce and encourage the high standards of professionalism among U.S. Forces serving in Japan.

The 35th Fighter Wing commander, Col. T.J. O'Shaughnessy, held four commander's calls throughout the day. During the commander's calls he discussed professionalism and core values.

"I want us to take the opportunity to reflect on our actions and the consequences of our actions," said Colonel O'Shaughnessy. "I ask each of you to talk to your family members and make sure they understand the consequences of their actions. Everyone is an ambassador."

In addition, Colonel O'Shaughnessy touched on General Wright's policy of unwavering professionalism. Unwavering professionalism is the "code of conduct" for U.S. Forces in Japan. It is a commitment to the highest levels of professionalism building on all U.S. military values, to include moral courage and mission competence.

"That is the best articulation of the role of military members that I've ever heard," he said.

During his commander's call, Colonel O'Shaughnessy also highlighted the good relationship that Misawa Air Base has with Misawa City - one of "co-existence, co-prosperity."

"Misawa sets the standard for joint and bilateral relations," he said. "We've had more than 20 years of outstanding relations with our Japanese hosts. We are very fortunate to live and work at Misawa. We need to make sure that those who come after us have that same opportunity."

The remainder of the "Day of Reflection" included squadron commander calls and small group discussion on what can be done to prevent negative incidents from happening here at Misawa. Activities focused on reaffirming ways to uphold unwavering professionalism.
