Misawa Air Base personnel will not only get to experience the culture of Japan but will be able to participate hands-on during Japan Day Saturday April 5.

The 21st annual event will show the American population at Misawa some aspects of Japanese culture and history from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Edgren High School.

"It's important to experience the local culture and have everything come together in one area to see it," said Capt. Jennifer Bradley, the Health Promotions Flight Commander at the Health and Wellness Center.

Japan Day is sponsored by the Misawa International Club, a local non-profit organization in the community, and is free of charge to the Misawa Air Base community.

"The Misawa International Club is very excited about getting and showcasing a Nebuta float from Aomori," said Capt. Cordy Herring, laboratory services chief at the 35th Medical Group. "In addition, a very expensive Japanese tea set and suit of armor will be out for display."

People on base can participate in learning a traditional Japanese style dance or watch it on stage. Traditional boy drummers and Chinese poetry singers will also be performing throughout the day. Mask making demos, embroidering, bonsai sculpting, flower pressing, calligraphy, Washi doll making, braid making, sand art and pottery classes will be held in the classrooms.

"People will be given the opportunity to make crafts and take them home," added Captain Herring.

"The event only happens once a year on base and this year's turnout is expected to rival last years," explained Captain Bradley. "We had 4,000 people attend last year and the same amount will be expected this year," she said. "I highly recommend for people to come out and enjoy the festivities."
