The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires annual water quality reports on the safety of drinking water. The report is called a consumer confidence report, and it enables community members to make decisions about their health and environment. 35th Civil Engineer Squadron water utilities is responsible for the constant treatment and maintenance of Misawa's water systems, and the 35th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight performs sampling and monitoring to ensure the water on base is safe to drink. "Bioenvironmental and water utilities make a tag-team effort to provide high quality water to the Misawa community," said Capt. Arturo Maloco, 35 AMDS bioenvironmental engineer. "We routinely monitor water throughout the year to ensure various contaminants meet regulatory limits of the Japanese Environmental Governing Standards and EPA regulations." The bioenvironmental engineering flight monitors for more than 100 possible substances in Misawa's drinking water, at differing intervals. "We collect samples and send some of them for analysis at the U.S. Air Force School of Aersopace Medicine Det 3 Laboratory at Kadena AB and U.S. certified laboratories," said Captain Maloco.
