Officials to collect annual road tax Published April 16, 2009 By 35th Fighter Wing Public Affairs MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- Officials from the Aomori tax office will be on base April 20-24 to collect road tax from Misawa Air Base drivers. The road tax is an annual tax collected by the prefecture to help maintain the roads. All owners of registered vehicles are required to pay the road tax. This year's road tax payments are scheduled to take place at the Mokuteki Community Center. People should attend according to their last name. The schedule is as follows: A-E: April 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. F-L: April 21 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. M-S: April 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. T-Z: April 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Make-up Day: April 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vehicle owners who are unable to make the scheduled days and times can have another person pay for them; no power of attorney is required. For each vehicle, owners must bring the following documents with them: Japanese title, valid JCI policy, 2008 road tax receipt, base registration and valid liability insurance. The road tax amount due is based on the size of a vehicle's engine. See the table below for prices. Payments are accepted in yen only. Representatives from the Community Bank will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to exchange money. After vehicle owners pay the road tax, volunteers will verify all vehicle documents are current and then issue the new base decal, according to Staff Sgt. Tyrone Nutter, 35th SFS pass and registration assistant NCO in charge. "Make sure your JCI and liability insurance is current," warned Sergeant Nutter. "We will be checking and if they're not current then it's a six-month driving privilege suspension, or six points on your driving record."
