The cherry blossoms are blooming and spring is in full swing. Residents with spring fever are reminded to practice safety when engaging in outdoor activities.

Spring safety concerns include outdoor grilling, lawn mowing, trampoline use and sports.

With the weather turning nicer, many residents are heading outdoors to cook. When grilling, never use gasoline to get the coals going; use charcoal lighter fluid instead, said Tech. Sgt. Carlos Rogers, 35th Fighter Wing safety office. He also recommends letting the coals soak for a few minutes before lighting, giving vapors a chance to dissipate. Be sure to store lighter fluid a safe distance away from the fire and never spray it on hot coals. Finally, be sure to always extinguish coals when finished and keep children away from the hot grill.

Spring time also means it is time to put away the snow shovels and dust-off the lawn mower. Know how to operate the equipment and read the owner's manual before beginning, said Sergeant Rogers. People should also clear the lawn of any debris before they start mowing.

"Dress properly for the job," Sergeant Rogers said. This means wearing long pants, sturdy shoes, hearing protection and safety glasses. "Keep your hands and feet away from moving parts and never remove or tamper with safety devices and labels designed to protect you."

Children around the base are heading outdoors to play. One activity seen around the base is children using trampolines. These can pose significant safety concerns.

"Always supervise kids when using trampolines and allow only one person on the trampoline at a time to prevent injuries," explained Sergeant Rogers. "No child under 6 years of age should use a full-size trampoline. And do not attempt or allow somersaults - landing on the head or neck can cause paralysis."

Trampolines should be places away from structures, trees and other play areas. Additionally, they should use shock absorbing pads that completely cover the springs, hooks and frames. Using a trampoline enclosure can help prevent injuries from falls off of the trampoline, said Sergeant Rogers.

Finally, many spring sports are starting. Players for each sport should properly warm-up before playing or exercising, and include a cool-down exercise afterwards. Follow the rules of the sport and always have the appropriate protective gear for the sport they are playing, said Sergeant Rogers.

"Know your limits - don't overdo it," Sergeant Rogers said.
