Water safety: tips for summer fun Published June 12, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Phillip Butterfield 35th Fighter Wing MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- The recent incident at Himberg Pool here last week, serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of water safety. Each year, during the summer months, the number of off-duty mishaps often rises; this time is commonly referred to as the 101 Critical Days of Summer. As the weather improves, people are outside enjoying a number of outdoor activities, which includes swimming. "As the weather starts heating up here, people are going to start venturing out to the lakes and ocean," said Staff Sgt. Scott Winstead, 35th Fighter Wing safety technician. "We want people to go out and enjoy the great water activities Japan as to offer, but we want them to do it safely." It is important to have the proper training and equipment before engaging in any activity. Ocean waters are very unpredictable and they must be respected, Sergeant Winstead added. "Perhaps the most important rule for service members to keep in mind is that alcohol and water do not mix," said Sergeant Winstead. "Alcohol inhibits reaction time and causes disorientation, which greatly increases the risk of drowning." The wingman system should also be in effect around water. No one should ever swim or be near water alone, Sergeant Winstead added. Here are a few additional tips: · Never rely on toys such as inner tubes and water wings to stay afloat · Don't take chances, or over estimating your swimming skills · Swim only in designated swimming areas · Wearing a life jacket For more water safety tips go to http://watersafety.usace.army.mil/safetytips.htm
