MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- Chances for self improvement and to give back to the community are available all around Misawa Air Base.
Volunteer opportunities are open for all Misawa AB Airmen, family members, DoD contractors and civilians on base through the Airman and Family Readiness Center or the Red Cross.
These agencies have updated contact information of agencies looking for volunteers and can help place people where they want to go.
Volunteer areas on base include:
- Post office
- Youth center (including coaches)
- Library
- PAWS (Pets are Worth Saving)
- Thrift Store
- Arts and Crafts
- Tax agency services
- Administration work
Hospital volunteering:
- Pharmacy
- Laboratory
- Medical records
- Dental
- Registered nurses and nursing assistants
Volunteering for agencies on and off base can help people become integrated around the community, explained Esperonza Romero, A&FRC volunteer resource coordinator.
"Volunteering can help polish job skills or even provide new ones," she said.
The A&FRC is holding a job fair Sept. 24 at the Mokuteki Community Center and new job skills obtained through volunteering can be beneficial when applying for jobs.
The Red Cross will also guide people where they want to go and provides opportunities for those interested in giving their time to the hospital.
"We offer cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes and even a six-month dental assistant training course for people who are interested in the dental career field," said Sarah Marshall, Red Cross field office assistant. "Registered nurses and nursing assistants are also welcome to volunteer in order to maintain their job skills while stationed here."
Red Cross volunteer orientation classes are offered the second Monday of every month from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Red Cross building. Information about the Red Cross, background checks and hospital orientation is given before volunteering begins.
