Whenever a distinguished visitor comes to Misawa Air Base, Japan, an elite team of professionals make sure everything is properly taken care of.

The 35th Fighter Wing protocol staff prepares itineraries, reserves lodging and transportation support, they cover every detail from the biggest to the seemingly insignificant, to ensure the smoothest visit possible. Protocol often starts working on a visit or project two to three months in advance, depending on the status of the event and how long it runs.

"Our primary job is to advise, give guidance and mentor project officers throughout the wing on how to run anything from base visits, changes of commands, to a variety of military ceremonies," said Brian Adams, 35 FW protocol chief.

Mr. Adams said when an event occurs, it needs to go flawlessly. He added that there's a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes on before any distinguished visitor makes a stop at Misawa, such as meticulously setting up lodging and coordinating well-organized itineraries, which is why it's very important to have an office full of people who know what they are doing.

Staff Sgt. Marcelo Sierra, 35th FW protocol, was selected in February 2010 to be on the elite protocol team. Sergeant Sierra was assigned to the 35th Force Support Squadron, and since joining the team has enjoyed the diversity of the job.

"I really enjoy getting out and doing something different," said Sergeant Sierra. "This is something that gives me the opportunity to see a different side of the Air Force and do things I wouldn't be able to in my previous career."

Sergeant Sierra also said he likes seeing what goes on behind the scenes and getting to know his leadership. He said no two events are the same and he has to adapt and learn from each situation.

The protocol office also offers base project officers training, when needed.

"The information I received from the protocol office helped me tremendously with the Senior NCO Induction Ceremony," said Senior Master Sgt. Darrell Roberson, 35th Maintenance Group quality assurance superintendent. "Without their help, the ceremony would not have gone as smoothly as it did."
