Team Misawa kicked off its annual Fire Prevention Week with a ceremony Oct. 5 in the base exchange parking lot.

"Fire Prevention Week is an avenue that gives the base community an opportunity to participate in some fun events and, in the process, helps us achieve our goal of fire prevention education," said Tech. Sgt. Kenneth Wobse, 35th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Emergency Services assistant chief for fire prevention.

"This has been a good year for the base's fire prevention program," Sergeant Wobse added. "We have only had minor mishaps on base and we continue to strive toward zero mishaps. Fire Prevention Week participation is a key to achieving that goal."

Events so far have included a barbeque, an auto extrication demonstration, a smoke trailer, and appearances by National Fire Prevention Association mascots, Sparky the Fire Dog and Pluggie.

"Pluggie is our remote-controlled fire hydrant that interacts with the children," Sergeant Wobse said. "Pluggie helps us communicate to children in a way that they can understand."

Throughout the week, Misawa's fire department personnel will present numerous fire-prevention demonstrations and activities for base members to participate in. A full schedule of Misawa Fire Prevention Week activities follows.
