While the expression, "tie one on," is an American euphemism for "get drunk," 35th Fighter Wing leadership here is developing another connotation for the base community to follow.

During the 16th Annual Green Ribbon Campaign, Nov. 22, chiefs, commanders and other senior leaders tied green ribbons onto vehicle antennae and windshield wipers at the base Exchange and commissary as a visual reminder for Airmen not to drink and drive during the holidays.

"It's great to kick off the 'Tie One On' campaign as we get into the winter holiday season," said Col. Michael Rothstein, 35th Fighter Wing commander, after cutting a ceremonial ribbon and beginning the campaign. "As we drive around with these green ribbons on our cars, it's a great reminder to be responsible and enjoy the holidays."

Additionally, the wing safety office handed out more than 3,000 green ribbons the wing's squadrons and units, as well as the Naval Air Facility Misawa as a component of a larger winter safety strategy for the base.

The base community is reminded to have a plan when drinking this holiday season. Alternative methods of transportation include calling several taxi services such as the Kichi Taxi at 616-5438 or free volunteer organizations such as the Americans Against Drunk Driving at 226-2232 (226-A2D2), which operates Fridays and Saturdays from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.  or the 35th Maintenance Squadron's Monkeys Against Drunk Driving, who offer reliable, safe rides home.
