Col. Van Wimmer, 35th Fighter Wing vice commander, presented the 35th FW "You Made a Difference" awards Jan. 11, recognizing two Cummings Elementary School educators for their dedication and commitment to students and fellow faculty members. The winners for Edgren High School and Sollars Elementary School will be announced in the coming months.

The "You Made a Difference" award recognizes the most outstanding teacher of the year from each of Misawa Air Base's three schools, nominated by their respective principals. Colonel Wimmer presented the award for Cummings Elementary School to 2nd grade teacher Tammy Smith.

"Mrs. Smith displays tremendous dedication and professionalism in all she does," said Scott Sterry, Cummings Elementary School principal. "She has an infinite love of educating students that goes far beyond the normal expectations of an excellent teacher."

In a surprise turn of events, Colonel Wimmer also presented the award to Mr. Sterry. Georgia Watters, Edgren High School principal, and Dana Chandler, Sollars Elementary School principal, secretly nominated him, citing his selfless passion for education, commitment to his students and faculty as well as his compassionate leadership.

"He is a first-class administrator, a pillar of support in the community, and a wonderful person," said Mary McCarty, 35th FW school liaison. "He goes out of his way to assist everyone in any way he can. Misawa Air Base is blessed to have him as a part of our community."

"Our Department of Defense Dependents School educators shape our youth and are a critical part of the Misawa community," said Colonel Wimmer. "It is only fitting to recognize their leadership within our community and dedication to their work."
