MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- Parents, children and faculty members from Yoiko Child Development Center walk during a fun walk April 13. The contributions of military children will be celebrated across the Defense Department as April is designated as Month of the Military Child. The Month of the Military Child was established to recognize the essential role that military child care services and youth activities play in fostering readiness and enhancing the quality of life of military families. It is also a time to recognize the contributions, sacrifices and stressors military children endure. Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger established the commemoration in 1986. MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- In the days since the historical Japan earthquake of 11 March, 2011, much concern has been expressed by the family members of servicemembers stationed at Misawa Air Base. The Misawa community would like to assure the families back in the United States that the residents of Misawa are completely safe.
