35 CS prepares for AFNET migration Published April 6, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Kaleb Snay MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- 35th Communications Squadron is scheduled to migrate Misawa's network to the new Air Force Network beginning May 28 and is scheduled to be finished by July 8. AFNet is the Air Force's solution to eliminating multiple independent networks and centralizing control into a single Air Force-wide network, said 2nd Lt. Danielle Shipman, 35 CS Plans and Programs flight commander. "The Air Force is looking to make the network easier and more convenient for users," said Shipman. "Expect growing pains in this process, but in the end the benefits will pay off." By creating one network, several changes will be made. One change will be Email4Life, which means that as long as someone is affiliated with the Air Force, they can keep the same e-mail their entire career, said Shipman. Another result of the AFNET migration that Misawa Air Base residents will notice is starting May 21 the 35th CS Comm Focal Point at 226-2666 will no longer be the Information Technology help desk, Shipman explained. A new remotely-located Enterprise Service Desk at (DSN) 510-435-7337 is scheduled to be started as its replacement. With all the changes made Air Force wide, having one network will lower the amount of issues that are currently happening, according to Staff Sgt. Christopher Way, 35 CS project manager. Every base has its own settings, compliances and chain of command for approval, said Way. Having one Air Force network will get things changed a lot easier because users will only have to submit it to one chain of command.
