The Defense Logistics Agency and the 35th Civil Engineer Squadron began a project to demolish five tanks in Tank Farm 1 across from the commissary at Misawa Air Base, Japan, May 14, 2012.

The project, scheduled to be completed in September, will remove fuel tanks that were installed more than 50 years ago, said Staff Sgt. Kenneth Gleckler, 35 CES construction inspector.

"The future uses for the land in the Tank Farm 1 area are in the planning stages," said Kyle Hicks, 35 CES Deputy civil engineer.

Gleckler said funding for this project comes from the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment and will cost approximately 3.27 million dollars.

35th Fighter Wing Public Affairs will document the project through completion.
