Wild Weasel of the Week: Airman 1st Class Emily New Each week a member of the 35th Fighter Wing is selected as the Wild Weasel of the Week. This individual is recognized based on superior performance, outstanding work ethic, and overall good conduct and discipline. The 35th Maintenance Squadron chose Airman 1st Class Emily New, precision measurement equipment laboratory journeyman, as their Wild Weasel of the Week. What is your daily mission? My mission is to calibrate, repair, troubleshoot, inspect and test measurement and diagnostic equipment for agencies. What do you enjoy about your job? Working in a controlled environment is definitely a perk, but mostly I enjoy being hands-on with equipment and grinding production. Why did you choose to serve in the Air Force? Tuition assistance, travel and meeting people who will forever be part of your life, but I've also wanted to be in the armed forces since I was a child. What is your favorite thing about living in Japan? A new adventure and life experience. My husband, daughter and I get to share the experience of a different country's traditions, food, architecture, landscapes and way of life. Who has been your best mentor and what have they taught you? I have had people who have helped mold, train, and guide me, but Master Sgt. Clifford Palmer, 35th Medical Group first sergeant, has stood out the most. Our families moved here at the same time and he's always taken time to ask how my family and I are doing. He lets me know I can succeed in my career because he was a late enlister as well. He also reassures me I can achieve my goals in the Air Force also while maintaining a family. Whenever I see him, no matter if it's at the commissary or a professional function, he always takes the time to speak with me. It's nice to know even though we don't directly work together that he genuinely cares about my family, my career and me. How long have you been stationed at Misawa? 1 year, 5 months How long have you been in the Air Force? 2 years, 3 months What goals do you want to meet while at Misawa? Finish my Community College of the Air Force degree in electronic systems technology, attend Airman Leadership School and promote to staff sergeant before my permanent change of station in February 2017. What goals do you want to meet during your Air Force career? At a minimum, I would like to make it to the rank of chief master sergeant, obtain a bachelor's degree and exceed all the standards expected of me.
