35 SGC personnel save both lives and limbs by delivering Diagnostic Imaging, General Surgery, Orthopedic, Multi-Service, Maternal Newborn, and Obstetrics and Gynecological health services for more than 11,000 Department of Defense beneficiaries. 35 SGC maintains readiness and supports worldwide contingency and humanitarian operations with 75 personnel.

Labor and Delivery (MNU)
The Maternal Newborn Unit at Misawa Air Base, Japan, provides inpatient obstetrical services for childbearing women and their newborns. We provide ante partum, intrapartum, and postpartum obstetrical and newborn nursing care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our flight is staffed with active duty and civilian registered nurses, medical technicians and Joint National personnel. A lactation educator is available for inpatient assistance and outpatient referrals Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The unit is secured and located in the basement of the hospital. Our unit averages 250 deliveries and triages/evaluates 500 obstetrical outpatients annually.

The Maternal Newborn Unit provides comprehensive obstetrical services for routine pregnant patients who are 36 weeks gestation or greater. It encompasses three labor, delivery and recovery rooms for childbirth and five postpartum rooms with a "rooming in" environment for mom and baby. All rooms are private, and include a bathroom with shower, television and phone. One support person can stay overnight during hospitalization. No children are authorized to stay overnight. In addition, the unit offers an operating room for cesarean sections, and an ante partum room. The entire unit is also a Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling wireless internet access from your room.

The Maternal Newborn Unit is a Level I Nursery, providing basic neonatal care. Specialized treatments such as intravenous fluids, antibiotics, oxygen therapy (limited timeframe), laboratory testing, and radiology for newborns are available. Your baby will be followed by one of our two Pediatricians.

Multi-Service Unit
The Multi-Service Unit at Misawa Air Base, Japan, provides in-patient medical and surgical services for all ages, active duty, dependents, and other beneficiaries. We provide the pre-and post-surgical care for all same day surgery patients, as well as patients admitted for inpatient medical-surgical care needs. Our flight is staffed with active duty nurses and medical technicians 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our unit averages over 250 surgery patients and over 200 patients admitted annually.

The Multi-Service Unit is a unit specialized in providing basic in-patient care. Specialized treatments such as intravenous fluids, antibiotics, oxygen therapy, and laboratory testing, radiology and medication administration are a few of the treatments that are available to our patients while under our care. Our unit consists of 9 beds, two of which are private rooms, one life skills room, a two-bed semi-private room, and a four-bed room utilized for our same day surgery patients.

Radiology
The Diagnostic Imaging Department at Misawa AB Hospital provides 24 hours a day; 7 days week coverage for patients that come to the MTF requiring advanced medical imaging. We are a fully digital department with an image archive system that allows doctors to review images and reports with just a few clicks of the mouse. These images are also able to be burned to a CD so that patients can have a copy of their studies when they PCS. Our team consists of one doctor (board certified radiologist) and several specialty trained technologists.

Services Offered:
Our department is able to perform standard and portable X-ray, Fluoroscopy, Digital Mammography, Ultrasound and CT (computed tomography) scans. Additionally, we have agreements with local hospital off base to perform MRI and Nuclear Medicine imaging which is then brought back to our department for image storage, review and interpretation.

Surgery Clinic
Welcome to the Misawa Specialty Clinic Home page. This web page will demonstrate the diversity of expertise within our Specialty Clinic Department. The clinical services are described in some detail. Our mission is to provide quality compassionate care for active duty military personnel, their dependents, and retirees here in the Misawa community. Misawa Specialty Clinic houses both the Orthopedic and General Surgery services on a fulltime bases. Currently, we typically see all patients (active duty, dependents, retirees) within one week of consultation, and schedule elective procedure for between one and three weeks of the initial appointment. We also accommodate post surgical procedure follow-up appointments.

Divisions
While the Specialty Clinic is divided into two primary services, we do offer other specialties as visiting consultants rotate through on a quarterly bases. Many of the staff providers have expertise which overlaps with multiple services. Thus, this listing is functional but sometimes arbitrary. Please discuss specific questions with your surgeon. 

General Surgery 

- Minor (clinic) - Outpatient surgery and/or procedures involving the GI tract, skin, and soft tissues that do not involve general anesthesia during procedure (endoscopy, hemorrhoid banding, skin excisions, etc).

- Major (OR) - Outpatient surgery and/or procedures involving the abdominal wall or cavity, GI tract, skin, and soft tissues requiring general anesthesia (ex. Hernias, gallbladder, appendix, colorectal, etc).

Orthopedic Surgery/ Clinic - Our scope of care includes both non-operative and surgical treatment of musculoskeletal problems including fracture, sports injuries, and arthropathies.

- Minor (clinic)- Procedures include corticosteroid joint injections, casting/splinting of various fractures, bracing, wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, and fracture reductions.

- Major (OR) - Surgical procedures to include knee and shoulder arthroscopies, surgical repairs of fractures, nerve releases, ligament repairs/reconstructions, and various other procedures.
