MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- Col. T.J. O'Shaughnessy, 35th Fighter Wing commander, and Capt. Ralph Elliot, 35th FW chaplain, cut the cake, kicking off African American Black History Month in the BX lobby Feb. 1, 2008. Upcoming celebrations and observances for the month include a soul food sampler from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Mokuteki Ballroom, a gospel concert from 3 to 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Tohoku Club and a Mardi Gras Ball beginning at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Tohoku Club. The month's festivities will culminate in a banquet scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Tohoku Club. The African American Heritage Commitee is also sponsoring a scholarship essay contest for children in grades 4-12. First prize for each grade category is a $500 savings bond.
