U.S. Air Force Col. Timothy Murphy, 35th Fighter Wing vice commander, was awarded the Legion of Merit decoration for his exceptional leadership and accomplishments during his time at Misawa Air Base. As the vice commander, Col. Murphy's guidance transformed base services by securing $43 million for new athletic facilities, increasing the child development center capacity, and initiating a $7 million campus redesign. These initiatives increased the quality of life and enabled the wing’s ability to maintain combat-ready Airmen.

“There are countless examples of innovation and creativity through increasing the quality of life here at Misawa,” said Col. Murphy. “I’ve been really passionate on the mission side and seeing what this wing has done - highest readiness rates in the combat air force, highest aircraft availability rates, and our Maintenance Group won the prestigious Daedalian award, training and exercising all over the Pacific, presenting our deterrent message.”

In recognition of his distinguished service, Col. Murphy has been selected to be the next 8th Fighter Wing commander at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea. His wealth of experience and expertise will prove invaluable as he leads the 8th Fighter Wing during a critical time in history.

“Working with our allies and partners where tension continues to rise in this region; Misawa has been front and center on all those efforts to commit to a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” said Col. Murphy.

The Misawa community wishes him all the best in his new role and looks forward to seeing the continued success he will bring to the 8th Fighter Wing.
